Kumihimo Japanese Braiding

Kumihimo is a Japanese art form for making braids and cords.  Learn all the basics for Kongo Gumi, 8 strand braiding. We begin with a simple lanyard or key fob, then we will learn how to braid with beads, add our finishings and clasps and make a lovely bracelet. (please note this is not the same braiding taught at the Knit and Stitch Retreat.)

IMPORTANT Please see supply list!
For the first week of class:
Purchase a kumihimo foam disk and at least 8 of E-Z Bobs plastic bobbins. The small ones are preferred.
For the lanyard/keyfob, you will need 2 contrasting colors of pearl cotton, please be sure they are the same weight for your first braid.
DMC in a size 5 or 8 is fine. Please also bring a tape measure, scissors and several sizes of sewing needles depending on your thread size for weaving in ends.

For the second week of class:
Two contrasting colors of size 8 or 6 seed beads. Pearl cotton to coordinate with these bead colors, and in a size appropriate to string the beads. You will need a 4 yard minimum in each color.
Several eye pins, 2 bead caps or cones, and a clasp for your bracelet.

During our first class we will cover stringing the beads and discuss any questions you have about the supplies for second week of class. In our third class we will add the finishings to your completed braid. Instructor will have extra jewelry tools on hand for use during the class.
Please be sure to purchase your supplies before class time!
