Knit Feather and Fan Lace Scarf

This is an easy first-time lace pattern that can also used in many other projects from shawls to dishcloths and afghans. Advanced beginners can learn about the different ways to add beads and grafting your knits.

This is a very traditional lace pattern that lends itself to all sorts of variations, often called Old Shale. In this class you will learn about knitting lace, planning a swatch for larger projects, grafting your knitting, and the several different ways of adding beads.
Any weight yarn can be used from lace weight to worsted,  needle size should be 2-3 sizes larger than recommended on the yarn label. Please do not select dark colors if this is your first time knitting lace.
Shop sample was knit with a sport weight alpaca with added beads on a size 5 needle.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: You must have basic knitting skills including knit and purl.
Materials Included: Pattern
Requirements: Select a yarn appropriate for the project you want to make. Any size yarn or fiber is good for a scarf or shawl. Cotton is best for a wash cloth. Needles should be two sizes larger than recommended for yarn selected. Stitch markers are a must. If adding beads, choose a size 6/0 and a fine crochet hook (steel) size 12-14 that will fit into the bead hole, or use a Beadle Needle. We can also discuss other tools used to add beads and pre-stringing beads on to the yarn as an option for a "traveling project".
